Waste Watchers

Fly along to clean rivers

Detecting river waste with drones & AI

What is Waste Watchers?

Waste Watchers was a collaborative project between River Cleanup and Vito. We deployed drones and artificial intelligence to find where litter gathers along the Scheldt River. Drones flew along the river banks, and their images were analyzed by artificial intelligence trained to recognize litter. That information was converted into a handy map showing highly polluted areas along the Scheldt.

Fly Days & citizen science

Drone pilots from all over Belgium supported our project by sending in their drone images. We also organized Fly Days to explain Waste Watchers and introduce people to drone technology. We are very grateful to everyone who helped make our project a success!

Results

This heat map shows the results of Waste Watchers. Yellow and red means there is a high level of pollution. Purple is a low level of pollution. For more detailed information on these results, you can email hanne@river-cleanup.org.
